There was something about Luke & Roman that worked for me. Possibly the fact that Roman started off actually being foul and ruthless. And that he is exactly what Luke fears to want, but craves desperately. It makes a great fantasy - someone who is truly dangerous deciding to treat a captive with care. It was touching and hot. (My own appreciation for the lack of continued beating on Luke may not be everyone’s thing but I thought it fit and was relieved by that early direction.)The details of Roman’s businesses were left vague enough to allow me to believe in their truth. I think the author is great at details of emotions & characters and terrible at details of characters’ jobs. Being mostly off page, Roman could be as vicious or not vicious as I needed him to be. In this book, I think the author made smart choices on what to write directly vs what to imply.I found the plot arc a little surprising - in a good way. There’s a real reason to meet cute (Luke’s idea) then re-meet not so cute (Roman’s idea). There’s a real reason and pathway to part (spoiler to say). There’s a reason on both sides to stay apart (not wanting to want each other, basically). There’s a reason to meet back up (the surprise touch).There’s not much acknowledgement that the son of a lord/billionaire going missing for an extended time is troubling to others that was probably hard to cover up. There’s no real acknowledgement later in the book that a gay relationship could be fatal for someone in Roman’s position, especially after losing trusted companions, but he does mostly live abroad so I guess the author decided to be vague about that too.From the catastrophe of the Trump administration, I’m not prepared to like billionaires, oligarchs, or mafia but took a chance on this because the series, for all its faults, it fun. This book started in a dark place that worked for both characters & for me. It was tricky to know what to want for them. I’m glad I read their story. It’s my favorite if the series. I've read something similar before so I had my apprehensions when I started the book, but as I got in to it, I really got in to it. Found myself loving their dynamic, how Luke had no idea just how much he affected Roman. Through it all he never truly lost himself to his captor, and I liked that he wasn't made to be a stupid child even though he had the appearance of one.I thought I would miss not seeing Roman's ruthless behaviour, but he is so well written that his attitude said enough for me. He didn't fight against his attraction to Luke long and that confidence made me like him even more.The book isn't perfect, it could have gone in to more details about the business side of things since it was a larger part of the plot, but it doesn't take away from the rating since the chemistry was there and I loved it.
